‘Finish on Wilson’s St,' 2011.
Maps present space, which is removed from any real experience we are able to have at that space. To navigate yourself through a map the viewer must observe and rehearse their movement path with their eyes over the page.
The latest GPS devices let satellites to do all the rehearsing for you, displaying to you the immediate space in front of you to perform. As you are driving you can observe the pointer moving through the 3d space, however you have no multi sensory experience of yourself actually moving though it. Instead of a whole area being laid out in front of you, a GPS screen only shows what’s in the immediate area.
‘Finish on Wilson’s St’ gave visitors the opportunity to see and feel themself moving through a GPS screen to their destination- the Brighton Town Hall. Like the GPS screen they only had opportunity to act in the space immediately in front of them. To continue on they may need to refer back to their street directory.
‘Shadowing Movements’ follows the lines of transportation in the Bayside City Council. Using the foot pedal of the sewing machine, I drove over maps of the streets of the Bayside City Council. The page-sized network of sewn lines and linkages is magnified by light giving the illusion of movement along the streets.
